Ok, our tenants are annoyed by the need for us to access the yard through their apartment. I understand that it’s inconvenient, but I have given a heads up and I have cleaned the apartment after each delivery of pebbles, cement, etc. it’s been two non consecutive days of about 3 hours each and now today we need about 3 hours (probably the last) I have tried to be understanding and helpful, allowed them to hang out in our place, watched their kid during the time and bought them dinner. Now, today she doesn’t want to allow access and finally agreed to one hour. What is reasonable here? have I not been nice enough?
By the way, when we rented them the apartment they were not home during the day,and they have access to the garden so they will reap the benefits of the work being done.
Thanks for any advice or recommendations!
I would ask my tenant for this kind of access to the garden, because we have a really solid relationship, he prefers living in owner-occupied buildings because of the projects, he’s really easy going and he’s really good at saying no without getting uptight when he needs to. I know that I could ask him without extending too much relationship credit or sowing the seeds of a conflict.
You organized these deliveries knowing that you don’t have the same kind of emotional access to your garden apartment. Your tenants bug you. Why impose yourself on them when there are other options, like going through the basement or parlor?
They do sound a little irritating, but you sound like you’re turning little things into big things and expecting a lot out of them even though you’re irritated by them. It sounds rather like contemptuous behavior on your part.
It *always* takes two to tango. If you’re goading them, it would make your life easier to stop.
Well when you do ask them to leave make sure you don’t rent to cillmylandlord_again, they’re a bigger wackjob than your current tenants.
As someone mentioned earlier there is continuum of reasonableness and sanity out there with extremes at both ends and they’re all in this thread!
I agree w/ DIBS!! Quoting gospel as usual (chapter and verse)!
No doubt both you and the tenants will reach a happy ending– either before the lease renews, or instead. It will be happy, or it will end.
Do assert your rights, don’t enjoy their cooking unless you’re invited for dinner, do consider a cleaning as well as the rest of the compensation(s), and most important, don’t be a doormat. Good tenants come and go–
Ana, enjoy your garden! Summer’s coming!
Why are you so concerned about the workers backs? They are getting paid to do a job just like movers who have to take furniture up and down flights of stairs.Besides they are use to it and they do it often.I thought you didnt have access from the parlor floor therefore I would see why they are upset. Track thru your level. No reason to go thru the tenants if you have access to the yard from your apt. That is a little unreasonable to me regardless of whether they want to use the yard or not.Yes dinner and babysitting is compensation but just because you do that doesnt mean it isnt an inconvenience. I dont allow the tenants to use the yard period under any circumstances.I dont want to be liable if they fall or their children get hurt or trip on the steps or whatever. When I first had the house and my tenants wanted to bbq or sit out and read I had them sign a waiver of liability but when they used my grill and didnt clean it and left the yard a mess after a party it was a wrap. Done deal.No more access for tenants. Period.
The tenants have a right to privacy and quiet. If the owners have access to the back yard they pretty much have to use it. Going through the tenants apt for unnecessary work, and a yardwork isn’t necessary, is a break of the right to quiet clause of the lease. Remember, your tenants pay you. If you can’t offer services then you ought not have tenants.
For those saying: “at least they have a garden, they don’t have a right to complain.” You don’t know if they pay extra for that garden.
DIBS corrects me, so I apologize for huffing in your general direction anabanana. At the end of the day, I hope you’ll have a beautiful garden.
You had me on your side until you said that there was access to the yard from your section of the home.
The tenant seem to have gone above and beyond being polite by allowing you through so many times as it is. Buck up and have the laborers and materials go through your place.
Tenants are there because landlords need their money. While you have been somewhat reasonable, you are still imposing on them. While it is your house, they are paying you to live there. Don’t be so hard on them.
3 hours a day for a couple of days, so everyone can enjoy a beautiful garden? And people are bitching? Unbelievable. ana- don’t renew. You can do better.
