We just moved into a new apt, and have mounds of books (two academics) that need to be put up. I am interested in getting shelving, I had thought of built in, but I actually prefer shelving that is on the wall and shows the wall behind. And to save money, as opposed to getting a master carpenter to build them, instead get someone to install ready made shelves. wonder if anyone has any suggestions of shelving they have used they like. We have a lot of exposed brick on one side, and also a painted wall on the other. havent decided the best place to put them, and some depends on the type of shelving we find and price.
Any suggestions of places to find interesting shelving would be appreciated.
Thanks!
I meant to add that The Shelf Shop is GONE–at least the First Avenue, Manhattan, location (if there’s more than one). It closed about two months ago, and there’s no indication at the empty storefront that it has moved elsewhere.
Keep in mind that someone (or a pet) can get badly hurt if your shelves fail, a reason not to do this yourself. Also, it’s nice to have shelves that fit perfectly in your space, designed to hold the books you actually own. You could even go with closed cabinets at the bottom if that works for you. Custom doesn’t have to be expensive, and you can save money if you go with a simple design and paint them yourself. That’s what we did.
I recommend Jerry Middleton, http://www.woodessentials.com He’s located in Williamsburg and does custom work in the NY Metro Area. Great guy and craftsman. He’ll give you exactly what you want at a reasonable price.
Not at all, generally speaking any gaps in a sound barrier make it useless.
Just curious–is a wall of books a good insulator of sound coming from the adjacent room/building?

ISS Designs does a great job with a good choice of designs and styles. They’re essentially custom made according to your needs, are of good quality and are easy for the weekend toolbox warrior to install. Highly recommended.
Or you can spend a LOT more…

Oh, and if you like that style, but don’t wanna do Ikea, the Ikea ones are a take on those sold at West Elm…

And of course, the West Elm ones are more expensive.
I second the recommendation for Ikea. I have these:

They are super sturdy and look quite nice. I recommend that size and also the one that is 4×4.
Try Ikea or the Container Store. Inexpensive does the job.
Atlas Industries – beautiful & well built but you will pay for it
