Spray Foam Insulation

For the cellar, instead of the spray foam I was thinking about using DOW Styrofoam Insulation, 2”. I don’t know if it’s necessary to spray since it’s to control the moisture. Any opinions?
As a diy project, I sprayfoamed the entire basement and it worked out great. After some research, I purchased from http://www.sprayfoamdirect.com/ (Foamit Green). Costs about $1 per square foot. If you buy it in the year 2010, you are eligible for a tax credit of 30% of the cost. Combined with saving on the labor costs, I think it is worth it. Works as a great air barrier so your effective R-value is actually higher than if you just used traditional fiberglass. It is also a great vapor barrier. The site I purchased from also has an anti-microbial version of the sprayfoam for just a few bucks more, as if regular sprayfoam is not mold-resistant enough. For your basement, if you have access to the foundation walls after stripping down your old insulation, I would buy some Drylock waterproofing paint and paint all the foundation walls first, then put on the sprayfoam.
I’m working with a friend on his house upstate and he’s just started spraying in DIY closed cell. The kit came with a video, which he said was helpful. I was a little leary about him msatering the technique, but it seems to be going very well and he is pleased.
i think some of the point of using the closed cell is the built in moisture barrier. you will have gaps with the extruded polystyrene foam boards but i think both are fine actually – just caulk and tape the seams with a special tape. i must admit seeing that guy use the blue spray foam on near every darn episode hgtv makes me want it…
