Is there any ‘brownstoner’ who has done a renovation involving a bulkhead to access the roof? Any recommendation on the framing to reinforce the bulkhead and the openning to access the roof?

  1. I’m looking at two bulkhead jobs right now. Stout wood framing posts and headers (LVLs) will carry the dead load of the roof (not very heavy), the dead loads of the decks (also not very heavy per square foot) and the active loads of vibrating mechanical equipment, the people (and/or elephants) walking around. The framing will tie in above below and side to side.

Lumber manufacturers usually provide engineering tables for spans and loads.

I come from earthquake country and tend to overbuild.
