Does anyone have experience with solar shades, either in terms of effectiveness or where to buy?

The south elevation of our house gets full sun year-round. The problem is particularly bad on our master bedroom, which is on the top floor facing south. While I would love to add awnings to the back of the house, that is not in the cards at the moment, so we are looking into solar shades (for example: http://www.theshadestore.com/category/shades/solar-shades/view/all). Personally, I hate air conditioning, so anything that reduces/eliminates the need to run them is a plus in my book.

Does anyone have experience with these (or others) to comment on the effectiveness of the solar shades? Do they reduce energy costs on running the A/C? Keep a room getting full sun comfortable on average summer days? Etc.

  1. Just seeing this posting now, but we got great solar shades at Green Depot on the Bowery. Spendy at about $150/per window, but very good quality and could be worth it if you have just a few very sunny windows. It reflects light back while still allowing you to see out, so you don’t feel like you’re stuck in a box.
