After reviewing many posts on brownstoner, we have a couple of questions as we attempt to get an emergency sidewalk replacement / repair without being ripped off. (A huge 18 wheeler truck drove up on our sidewalk, causing the majority of it to collapse.) We’ve got two young kids, husband traveling all the time for work, we needed a hole in the sidewalk like we needed a hole in the head. Please help us out!
— Need recommendations of contractors who will handle the job properly for a reasonable price. Considering Artistic Masonry and Atlantic Contracting.
— Sidewalk is approx. 150 sq. feet. Artistic is quoting $3500, including getting the DOT permit. We would need to get a Landmarks permit ourselves, and apparently Landmarks will require the concrete to be dyed a certain color. Reasonable quote? It’s over $22 per sq. foot, seems quite high.
— We’re working on trying to recover costs, obviously.
— Any other advice welcome.
Thank you most heartily.
Ditto on Shahab Construction. Who has used him recenty? Any comments?
Anyone used Shahab Construction recently?
Anyone else able to chime in on John of Tritower?
Thank you in advance.
You’re talking about Buscarello & Sons, 201 7th St., Brooklyn, correct? There are a few New York Buscarellos, including another Brooklyn contractor.
Thanks.
Thank you everyone.
Status update for the curious:
— Artistic Masonry publishes a nyc license number on the web that is incorrect. Dept. of Consumer Affairs could not find any licensed home improvement contractor by that name. I am going to check back with the guy to make sure it’s not a typo, because he’s done very nice work for neighbors and seemed perfectly prepared to go with the permitting process.
— Got a quote for $1800 from Atlantic but thinking of not using them because of warning posted here. Thank you!
— Got a quote for $1800 (untinted, tint would be more) from Nino at SAT Utility Contracting. A friend who is a good, experienced GC saw them doing a sidewalk installation in Queens and got their card for me because they were doing the job right. License checks out, no complaints on file. Anybody have any experience?
— Calling Buscarello and John at Tritower for sure.
— Not having luck tracking down the truck. It was largeley unlabeled, except for a small label on the door, and no one can recall what that said. No neighbors have stepped forward to say that it was their delivery, so we may be at a dead end. Still hunting though….
Have a beautiful week everyone, and thank you again!
Tryout John from Tritower…he charged us $ 8-10 a square foot and did everything including Landmarks…..Just great
….go look at 89 state street off of henry ….

Good Luck
Arkady has some good recs… Buscarello did the two sidewalks next to me. I went with someone else because they were doing my facade at the same time, but I liked Buscarello’s work better (but my facade looks good so I won’t mention their name here).
The DOT permit is over $500 alone. The job requires removal of the whole sidewalk and pouring new grey tinted concrete over re wire. $3,500 is about the going rate for a sidewalk. Contact us if you want another quote. We advertise on the right and in the directory under general contractors.
Isn’t the trucking company going to pay for the repair? Then I would want it restored to the original state/material.
My recollection is that you’re not supposed to put salt or other chemical ice melters on new concrete for at least a year. I’ve heard that concrete guys recommend sand or other grit during the first season. After that, salt is fine.
