The recent rains did in my old roof and I now have a leak in the top floor ceiling of my park slope brownstone.
(1) Can anyone recommend a roofing contractor?
(2) Do you know of a roofing contractor who would be willing to remove the old layers of roofing material before putting on new material?
(3) Can contractors put a layer of insulation unter the new layer of roofing material that they install?
(4) Is any roofing material better than the rolls of felt roofing that have been used in past decades?
Any advice would be most appreciated.
hello oldparksloper just to let you know dan’s number has changed to 718 485-1044.
hello oldparksloper I know of a good roofing contractor that is local and very reasonable his name is Dan you can reach at 718 919 7794 and he is very reliable good luck.
I never hesitate to recommend City Skyline Inc. for any roofing job. They are prompt, professional and they do very good work. And I really hate water…at least in terms of it getting into buildings. With them doing the work, I know I can sleep soundly.

call GAF or Firestone for a list of local certified installers and you’ll get a real warrantee. you want a minimum 2 ply system, but most roofs leak from the flashing details, paripit walls or roof drain areas. yes you can add insulation beneath, it still must pitch towards the roof drains, so if you add 2″ @ the low pt you might be adding 8″ elsewhere, which could cause other issues.
I recommend my contractor Nick from Transcend construction. This is a real rec (I’m not Nick : ). He is now finishing up a gut reno for me. You can see pix on my reno blog http://www.diywithadd.com and email me directly from there for more info. Transcend specializes in exterior work and they are doing some roof repair for me. Best of luck!
