Really Heavy Safe
I need to remove a really big heavy Victorian safe from a room in my basement. It needs to go up a short flight of four stairs. It weighs at least a ton and is on casters. Does anybody know who I should call?

Years ago I used to do some rigging, mostly printing presses.
I would call some of the safe companies. They move safes for jewelers constantly. What you are requesting is NOT a BIG DEAL.
People think that it is the steel in a safe that is heavy, actually it is the cement in the walls for the fire rating.
Years ago there was a safe outfit I used on Howard St, but they probably moved 20 years ago. Make some calls until you get someone who is willing to help for a minimal fee. They will be able to figure out if your wild guess about the weight is accurate.
if it fits through the door from your measurements, and its on casters you should be able to get a couple guys to make a ramp out of a piece of plywood and run it up the ramp. if it won’t fit out the door, it will have to come apart. this might be useful to who you would call. stonergut’s boiler people idea is brilliant if it cant make it through the doorway.
Post a picture of it. You might find someone who wants it either for scrap metal or resale and will come and get it.

Do you have to get it out intact? Probably it can be destroyed or cut up and brought out in pieces. That’s how they got my boiler out and it didn’t take too long.
I think you’ll need a heavy equipment and machinery rigging company. The kind of people who move large printing presses, etc. Not cheap.
Perhaps it can be disasembled to a certian degree and moved in separate pieces. But if it truly weighs a ton you may be SOL. Was the house built around it?
not sure it should be moved….if there’s a fire, whomever or whatever is under that safe when comes crashing down is a goner…..and then, if the fall cracks the safe open, whatever is inside is a goner….
