Pea Gravel Patio
Does anyone have any experience with pea gravel as a patio material? If so, how was it to walk on, place furniture on, etc.? I’m really considering replacing the dirt/grass in my backyard with pea gravel. I really like the look, but I want to make sure it’s comfortable to walk on, etc. Thanks!

one draw back is wheels dont like it especially wheel chairs
We have pea gravel as well but there are two things I don’t like about the pea gravel. One the dogs are always using the area for a bathroom. The other is the kids like the size of the gravel to use as weapons to throw. We have put some Patio Furniture on ours and that works well but not sure how to get the dogs to not use the area as a bathroom.
Where can one find pea gravel in Brooklyn?
yeah it gets stuck in the boots, and the kids pick it up and redeposit in around the yard. But we still like it. we have our children’s sandbox in that same area, and the spillover sand coexists well with the gravel. Soft metal tang rakes will pick up the fall leaves without taking up the gravel. We have a terrible feral cat problem on the block, and we worried they would LOVE the gravel, but it turns out they don’t seem to like walking on it.
I love the look and feel of pea gravel. The only downside is they tend to get stuck in the treads of some shoes or workboots. If you’ve got some pristine wood floors you need to be vigilant.
I love pea gravel. It’s wonderful. And it is not hard to get the leaves up in the fall.
🙂
greenwood – does your pea gravel area get leaves on it in the fall? I am considering doing the same, but it’s a space under some major trees. Wondering about picking the leaves up. Thanks
We have an area of peagravel with some large bluestones mixed in. It’s comfortable to walk on (with shoes). Furniture is fine. Make sure the ground underneath is prepped. We had hard packed dirt, and put landscaping fabric down and pea gravel on top. It holds up. Even better would be to put down the prep layers of gravel and rock to make a hard surface- however, we weren’t ready to commit the area to permament pea gravel patio space.
