I’m planning an extension to my single family. I’m considering adding multi-zone heating and cooling by installing a mini-split system to serve the second floor. Can a mini-split system provide reliable adequate heat in our area? I know Mistubishi’s multi-system is rated down to 12 degrees F, and Sanyo goes down to 0 degrees F, but does efficiency drop off noticeably at higher temps?

  1. I installed the Mitsubishi City Multi system (5 zones). This past winter was my first full winter with the system. I found it to be a virtual wash, maybe 5 -10% higher cost compared the the Gas fired forced air system it replaced. Con Ed bill for my 3 story x 17.5′ wide runs about $500-$600 per month Dec – Mar (so about 400 – 500 for heat). In the summer (a/c season) though my savings are over 30% compared to the window units I replaced (my bill in summer was usually about $250 and now about $175).
Additionally, I was able to reopen my fireplaces because I removed the old ductwork from running in the chimneys (some screwed up previous owner’s install).
All in all I’m very pleased.

  2. Simple answer: yes.

Heat pumps that can heat below 32F are a newish and exotic breed. The efficiency at below freezing drops to the same as electric resistance heating, so it is *very* expensive here (at 50F, heat pumps are 4x+ as efficient).

I would use it as supplemental heating only. Also good for those damp 50F days when steam heat does not come on.
