We have wrought-iron gates, stairs and balconies that need to be repainted. Any recommendations based on previous experiences? We live in Park Slope. Thanks!

  1. Hi I am a handywomen who has been doing this sort of work for over 20 years, iron gates are one of my specialties. I can get rid of any rust, restore any rust damaged areas. Prime any areas that need an undercoat, and give you a mess free top-coat.

I can offer excellent referrals, you can contact me at deefinite@gmail.com or 646-363-4222.

  2. If you DID live in an Historic District you wouldn’t need LPC approval to repaint in the SAME color.

I’ve re-painted my under-stoop gate and window bars a few times over the last 30+ years. Rustoleum paint (and primer) seems to hold up better than other brand I’ve tried.

  3. I’d get estimate from Shahab Udin. Has done all sorts of work for me over many years, major and minor. Masonry, installed new ironwork and painted, etc, etc. His cell is 646-523-7155.

  4. This work is easily done by homeowner. If hiring out, also done by VinRoy: 646-554-4513. Even if you were in a historic district, repainting railings the same color is considered ordinary maintenance—no permit necessary. For more info, see LPC work guidelines, page 25: http://bit.ly/c2dpJj

  5. We’re not located in the Park Slope Historic District. I’m assuming this means we don’t go through the Preservation Commission?
