I am planning a renovation of my apartment and would like to do the work myself as I have some free time coming up.
I did some construction work when I was younger and feel pretty confident that I could do the work myself- mainly a new bathroom and kitchen.
I know that I can obtain a building permit by filing a Home Improvement Contractor Affidavit (Waiver of License Requirement)as a homeowner. I was wondering if anybody has done this before and how difficult it was to get approval from the Building Department.
Were there any other forms that needed to be filled out or any insurance requirements that the Building Department requires?
Would love to hear from anyone that has gone through the process.
Thanks in advance.
CM,
Was it difficult for you to get a homeowner’s permit? Please provide an recommendations. My architect has submitted our plans and we are waiting to hear back from the DOB. Did you have structural work (i.e. reconfigure layout)? Thanks
It looks like I will have to take out some worker’s comp. and disability insurance as I will need a few guys to help me. I’m moving the kitchen and bathroom to the middle of the apartment from the back and creating a large bedroom and walk-in closet in the back of the apartment. I have a licensed plumber but will need to find a licensed electrician.
Thanks for everyone’s help.
Go here for the exemption on the insurance:

Are you sure you need a permit at all? It you’re not moving plumbing or electric…
You can get a homeowner’s permit but you must have approval from the boro commissioner’s office which they are usually limiting to a max. of a 4 family house or your own unit in a co-op / condo but for construction only. For plumbing work you must get a licensed plumber to do that part.
Just pulled my second permit as you describe. After having architect’s plans submitted and approved, had to fill out a PW-2 and provide certificates evidencing coverage for workers comp and disability insurance which I was able to obtain from the State Insurance Fund at minimal cost.
