Seeing mixed reviews for every heat gun – even the high priced ones. Any recs? Should I invest in a Silent Paint Remover or is anyone interested in selling their old one?

  1. Hi Putnamsleaze
I purchased a heat gun on Amazon (Milwaukee 8985) after doing the statutory “best heat gun” search. Way too impatient! It will arrive on Friday. My paint stripper guy was using what I would describe as the equivalent of a hair dyer/blow dryer. But I would love to try the infamous SPR – email is kellyk437 at yahoo dot com (I think this is the way I should post it!). There is alot of paint to be stripped so I would love all the machinery that will make life easier.

  2. I bought the top of the line SPR last summer (the one with the gold fillament or something) and stripped every piece of wood in my clinton hill house… I’m done now and I have it plus the tools if you want to make me an offer. Post your email and I will send you my phone number…

  3. I have both and recommend having both if you’re doing a bunch of stuff. SPR definitely safer. My heat gun is an ancient (1980s?) model that came with my house (aka found in the basement).

  4. I also encourage SPR. I have been using it in a prewar apt that is covered in paint. Its the most efficent and clean up is easy. You still need to take precaution, clean up well and you must wear a good respirator with hepa filters as a smart precaution. SPR doesn’t release lead into the air the way a normal heat gun would but I wouldn’t take any chances.

Also I got tested for lead just as a precaution after using it for awhile. I had virtually none and I wasn’t crazy anal about cleaning and stuff but do use caution.

lastly, totally worth the money, plus you can sell them on ebay for around 300 which isn’t too bad considering it only cost 400.
