Hi, I need to move a couch out of my apartment and I’m afraid it will not go out the door. I had movers bring it in and with much difficulty, they were able to do it. However, I will be moving the couch out myself, without an experts there to assist me. It is old and I don’t want it anymore, so I am okay with cutting it. But I’m wondering if anyone has any other suggestions of how to get the couch out, or someone who I might hire to come and cut the couch in half to get it out and generally how much that should cost.
Thanks.
ha! boerumhill good idea. and thanks msb for the lead on a place to cut it up.
i like the idea of free-cycle on craig’s list, but i think the movers had to take down my door in order to get the couch in and it’s just not worth that to me. sometimes living in a small space in a city is such a hassle.
do you think i’ll find gnomes and chocolate in the couch if i cut it up? i hope so.
This hilarious. I had a garden apartment with a tight turn…took the movers an hour or two to get a big sofa sleeper in the door. At one point they took the tire changing jack out of their vehicle so they could move it a couple inches. Quite the spectacle.
When I moved out I gave my LL an extra $100 and told him good luck with that (he had stopped by the day we moved it in). Think he and his biZ partner took a chain saw to it – saw it on the curb the next week in multiple shredded pieces.

They’re awesome. They’ll come to your house, take the sofa apart, cut it in half if need be and then put it back together on your curb. I think it costs $275. When they took my sofa apart to get it into my place, they told me they’d never encountered a sofa they couldn’t get into our out of an apartment.
Oh please. Turn it over, get a crowbar and pry it apart. Put the smaller pieces in heavy duty contractor bags.
The end.
i had to look into this about a year ago. quotes were generally $300-$400 for the service.
lol. i like all these responses, but rob, what crazy stuff might i find? any good stories????!!!
Out the window Amsterdam-style? 😉
omg ill cut your couch in half. seriously! but i think you should be able to dismantle it anyway once you open the apolostry? be prepared to find some crazy stuff when you take apart a couch!
*rob*
If it got in you should be able to get it out without damaging it. Even if you don’t want it, it can be donated to a charity who will find a use for it. In an extreme case there are services that will come and take it apart and put it back together once it’s out, although this isn’t the cheapest solution.
Or how about posting it on Craigslist for free as long as they come and get it out? Then it isn’t your problem any more.
