I just passed the exam from the Department of Consumer Affairs and I received the Home Improvement Contractor/Funded-A License number. Am I entitled to get the contractor’s discount? Any advises?

  1. It’s been my experience that hardware stores I have gone to for a long time, who know from what I buy that I am doing work for others will offer me a discount it varies generally 10%. I have also gone to places who accept my business card as proof of being a contractor. A lot of times places are willing to give a break to the little guy.
Odd too cause Janovic has always given me a contractors discount?

  2. Metropolitan Lumber in Astoria will slide 10% off materials. Dykes will give a discount but it is through their house charge, so if you don’t have that, its no go. HD is a no. Grainger will tell you it is based on volume. Janovic paint will tell you everyone gets contractor pricing. Overall, most pricing is determined by volume not the mere fact that you may be a contractor.

Something else vendors may ask for besides the license is a NYS Dept of Taxation Certificate of Authority or Fed tax id# or busness checking acct (these really prove you are in business, particulcarly if you are not incorporated). Be careful if you get the Tax Cert. as then you have to file sales tax returns just like income tax (and its worse because you get nothing back, you just pay).
