Toilet Tank Not Filling....
We have a toilet that is having problems. The tank stopped filling. I lifted the top of the tank off to look inside – the bobbing thing seems to work fine; flapper is fine. Even when I manually raise/lower the bobbing thing, no water fills the tank. The rest of the water in the bathroom…

I am at a loss… Anyone know what is the problem???
thanks!
Close the shut off valve bringing water to the toilet tank and unscrew the “up and down thing” it is propably clogged with dirt or some rubber piece. Let us know.
I would call a plumber and get it fixed by a pro.
You should check to see if someone is playing a trick on you and turned off the water valve behind the toilet! 🙂
Interesting! Thanks MP. I will change the entire part (the refill valve) this weekend and see if that does the trick.
Well….actually the opposite is probably true. If you’re moving that float up and down and not getting water it’s because that part has failed.
Master Plvmber,
I guess I don’t know for sure that the “bobbing thing” works fine… Our toilet does not have a “float”. It looks more like picture “b” from the doityourself website above. The water does not fill even if I manually slide the plastic piece up and down (ie the part that should allow the water to fill and then stop it from filling), the toilet still does not fill. So, I dont beleive that is the problem.
How would you know “the bobbing thing” “works fine”?
Sounds like you need a new fill valve.
