Hello,

I’ve looked up all the previous posts on this and I wonder if I could get a fresh perspective on this. Possibly renting an apartment with security bars that don’t allow for A/Cs. I am wondering if it would be cheaper to get 2 windows redone with the bow in the iron to accommodate this or to purchase those portable A/C units that sit in the apartment. So I guess I’m wondering if anyone has had 2 window’s bars replaced and what the cost was, ballpark. Ground floor, standard sized windows. No real curve balls. I appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

  1. If the windows in question are in the back of the house, think Steve’s offer is the way to go. If in the front, you may want a curved bow instead of the cut box in the existing for aesthetic reasons. I had a nice curved grill installed by Vinnie’s Iron works a couple of years ago and it looks great. I don’t have the receipt handy but remember the price was very reasonable. The in-room portable a/c’s are not the best option – most are crap and the ones that do a good job are expensive, they are louder than their window unit cousins, and they take up a lot of space.

  2. I can cut these and weld a box shaped cage on each of them (depends on the thickness of the existing steel; I only have a light welder). Someone mentions $300.00 for the job they had done; I can probably do two of them for about $500.00 inc material.

  3. I paid $300 a couple of summers ago for the kind that’s like a cage. They did a good job but unfortunately I can’t recall the name of the guys who did it.

  4. For $150, I had a section of bars hinged so you open it when the a/c is in. Otherwise a padlock keeps it secure. Some local shop did it in a couple hours.
