My coop is looking to insulate our Cast Iron Steam Piping with something other then then fiberglass. Is there foam insulation that would fit a 2 and 1/2in cast iron Pipe. Will the same foam withstand the steam temperatures?

  1. supply and return should be insulated with fiberglass and taped and coated and labeled thickness depends on pipe diameter on commercial jobs some of that insulation is quite thick special fitting insulators are available with plastic covers that are shaped like elbows tees etc but all this will not keep area cool if that’s your objective if yu want a really first class job like we do on commercial construction i know there is a trade union that does pipe and duct insulation they are used to high spec jobs materials im not aware of a non union version but i suspect these shops likely have a non union branch if your co-op doesn’t have 32a/b doormen porters etc it wnt be a problem except for your concience

  2. Micro-lock 1″ thick by Johns-Manville is good for your supply piping. 1/2″ should be fine for the returns.
Knauf is another brand and so is Owens-Corning it’s all the same stuff.
And don’t be a cheapskate. Wrap the fittings too…

  3. I used two things: tube-like things which were quite expensive but very insulative (fibeglas), and foil-backed wrapping which is still hot to the touch.

Does anyone know how *much* insulation is good? My basement is still pretty warm tho’ most of the outgoing piping is wrapped. Should I install more insulation? And how much of the return piping, which is mostly bare now, should be insulated, if any?
