Cleaning Small Wood Deck
We have a small deck/terrace that needs a good cleaning – the wood is green in parts. Can we rent a small power washer and do it ourselves (or even with a bleach solution, scrubby thing and elbow grease)? The plan is to then paint and seal it. Any tips/thoughts? How much do you think…

I agree with Dave. A power washer can erode the softer tissues of the wood if used incorrectly…especially on cedar and pine decking.
Get a deck wash product with oxalic acid, and scrub.
I don’t recommend painting the deck. If the paint fails, and starts to peel/chip, then you will really have a problem. Get an oil based sealer with a stain and UV protection. They are easy to apply, and reapply when necessary. I use Penofin on all of my decks.

The one I bought is adjustable.
You can buy a power washer for almost as much as it costs to rent. Bought mine at Home Depot, works great and does not take up any more space than an upright vac.
Power washer, if too strong, can cause a lot of damage. Usually not necessary.
I do mine every year w/ Deck Boss & a brush & then a hose. Be sure to let it dry completely before painting. Days of dry weather.
