I have a roofdeck that I went through hell to permit. I have angry nosey neighbors and now need to install a privacy fence. Will I need building permits to install this? The contractors are telling me no, but I know the neighbors will call the DOB and don’t want to get hit with fines…

  1. YEs dave, i’m with you for sure.. the fence will make them NUTS! i emailed the architect that helped me with the deck and am hoping he doesn’t charge me alot since it’s just a small addition to the drawings he’s already done. fingers crossed.

bohuma.. my bf is a photographer and did a fashion shoot on the roof with a model in a bathing suit. cops came answering a call that ‘porn was being filmed on the roof’ so you name it, i’ve had it reported!

  2. I’m with daveinbedstuy – your neighbors sound like real pains in the butt, some peole complain about anything.

In the meantime, some nude sunbathing might be in order during the summer months.

  3. just got off the phone with the DOB.. due to the many zoning laws they said fences do need to be permitted. they said this would also make me bulletproof when the neighbors call (and they WILL call). so my $1000 piece of privacy just turned into $3000 🙁

NYC the city i hate to love.

  4. You can probably look up the provision on the DOB Site- they have a searchable code database. It’s not the most straigtforward site, but you could probably get what you need. They also have downloadable PDF files that say what needs a permit, but they are too general to answer your question.

You could also just call an expediter- tell them you want to put up a fence, what kind, and ask them if you need their services. They will just tell you if you need a permit or not, since they’d only be able to file it if it was needed.

I think you can also just call the DOB and ask- but the wait is probably ridiculous.

  5. my neighbors are just angry because they have lived in their apt for 40 years. they think they own the neighborhood and have done nothing but cause trouble for me.

my question is basically.. do you need to get a building permit everytime you pick up a hammer in NYC? or does some work not require a permit… this is how the contractor is making it sound. i’ve tried calling the DOB to ask directly, but plan examiners never answer their phones.

  6. What kind of permit would one need to obtain to build a roof deck anyway? I mean, what if your house is on its own lot of only semi-attached?
