I am looking for a wood fireplace insert. The size limitations are great, it’s a standard fireplace in a brownstone. The mantle was removed and I would like to have something more modern but without taking so much space. I am looking for airtight stoves, with intake air, so I don’t need to open the windows. Any advise about a brand that makes the smallest wood burning stoves? I would prefer a clean look, just black. The building is in Flatbush, I assume there is nothing in the DOB code against airtight wood fireplaces, right? I was thinking about using one of the existing flues as a source for air.
Thanks!
Have you checked out the Jotul’s? They are woodstoves and inserts. I have one (a stove) and it is better than the FP upstairs as it heats up the whole floor really well. They have a very classic look.
We have also specified the Vermont Castings in a number of projects. They have worked well and clients were happy…Highly recommended.

Vermont Castings winter warm (small). 350 lbs. fits in b’stone fireplaces.
We have fireplace insert manufactured by Kozy Heat http://www.kozyheat.com. We’ve used it heavily for 7 years and been very happy with it. We vented it up the rear portion of our home and it does a good job of heating the back room on 3 floors. We miss the smell and amibiance of an open fireplace. That’s the sacrifice for efficiency.
