hello all! my adorable, if absentminded, husband forgot to flush before we left the apartment for a week. this resulted in the urine eating away at the enamel on the inside of the toilet at the bottom of the bowl – where the water rests. does anyone know if there is some sort of product i can use to re-enamel the inside of the bowl? any other suggestions? no matter how clean the toilet is (i scrub and scrub…) it looks FILTHY and i want to remedy it… but not enough to replace the entire thing. any suggestions greatly appreciated! thanks!

  1. For the record toilets are not covered in enamel. They are glazed and high fired in a gas kiln just like porcelain china plates and bowls. Enamel is what covers cast iron tubs, sinks, and stoves.

  2. Arkaday, I’ve used pumice many times, and it doesn’t scratch. It’s one of the few compounds that work for getting tough stains off of porcelain. You can buy pulverized boxes of it at most hardware stores – also sometimes called “rotten stone”.

  3. Oh, cmu! I remember those glorious California days of not flushing and Governor Brown. Come to think of it, the poster was “If it’s yellow, let it mellow, if it’s brown, flush it down.” Was this a political or environmental campaign?

  4. I wouldn’t use pumice – it’ll scratch the enamel which already sounds as if it’s porous. I wouldn’t even use those nylon pot scrubbers.

  5. I just got off the phone with a Toto technical support representative. They informed me that it’s due to the calcium in the water. They suggested to drain the toilet and first try white vinegar, if that doesn’t work go to a local hardware store and purchase CLR (Calicum ,Lime Rust Removal and that will do the trick.

  6. this toilet is a toto too! maybe it’s the kind of enamel they use? so annoying… thanks for the tips people, i’ll try anything at this point!
