I have some magnificent, huge custom mahogany doors (painted) that open onto our backyard. They are six paneled — two large panels on bottom and four smaller ones on top. The top panels are double layer glass, and the bottom are wood. In an effort to get more light into the room, I’d like to have the bottom panels replaced with glass. Privacy isn’t an issue (since it’s really the top windows that provide a peeper’s view anyway).

Advice on likihood of this being done w/o ruining the doors?

Do I use a glazer, handyman, or carpenter? Rec’s for who to call?

Thanks!

  1. Hi Tanner–I just emailed you as well…hope that’s alright. We have been speaking with CHDB about a job and wanted to know more as to your experience before we moved forward. Thanks!

  2. tanner-

trying to get a hold of you to discuss about your nightmare contractor design build experience. Need to know more. Thanks.

  3. Try Omar at Artistic Wood Crafts. They do lots of brownstone doors. I have used for other work and am very satisfied. They have lots of write ups on this blog.

  4. I did this once on interior doors for someone – routed the trim off the rails and stiles, removed the panels and put glass & new trim in. The customer was very pleased. i also have the equipment to make up replacement trim if that is needed (on some doors the trim is seperate and can be easily removed and on others it is part of the stile/rail).

    I also make doors.
