Something's Trying to Get In!
I suspect its a squirrel but my tenants on the top floor think these marks are too big and sharp for a squirrel. I have never in my 16 yrs here seen a raccoon in the yard or anywhere… any ideas? and any recommendations for what to do to get rid of it/them?

I would guess a squirrel too. I had one in the ceiling in my last apartment. It wasn’t gnawing through the ceiling but you could hear it running around up there at night and early morning.
My money’s on squirrels, which are rodents, basically furry rats. They gnaw, and scrabble around, and can create total chaos in a roof if not dealt with.
No reason to exterminate a racoon! Please consider humane animal removal.

could it be pigeons? any other exterminator recommendations?
yes, bugleg, the tenants have heard some scrambling now and then. And believe its too loud to be mice.

Strange indeed. Have the tenants heard the varmin in the ceiling?
Winginit, I can’t refer you to an exterminator or even tell you if a raccoon did that, but it is a fact that raccoons have been spotted in Brooklyn and Central Park. Last summer I saw a raccoon waddling out of our yard here in Greenpoint. We have a pond and several fish went missing. A neighbor, also with a pond, spotted a raccoon with five babies. Good luck with the removal of that critter whatever it is!
Yikes. I would call an exterminator right away. If you’re casting about for ideas, we just had Empire on Court St. in Carroll Gardens over to check out termites, and they seemed good.
