A flag of the sidewalk in front of my property has cracked and begun breaking up as a result of the winter freeze and thaw. Any recommendations for who to call, and at what point in spring new cement can be safely poured?

  1. We’re using a company called B and R concrete. They are doing landmarks and DoT filing for us and can be reached at (718)763-9110. Ask for Angelo.

I can’t vouch for the quality of their work because all they”ve done for us so far is a quick little patch at an area where the blue stone got smashed. They are very nice and say they’ve done some work around Federal Plaza in Manhattan and they’ll be happy to provide references.

  2. Wow, bessie2, what a great link–both for concrete and for planting. Thanks! Who are you using and have you used them previously? Our insurance policy is coming up for renewal, too. Will your contractor handle the permits if necessary?

  3. Here is the link to the NOAA spreadsheet showing probability of frost for New York. According to their data for Brooklyn – after April 21 there is only a 10% chance of temperatures less 36 degrees Fahrenheit. Oddly, the date is April 24 for New York City.

I am having some sidewalk work done at the behest of insurance carrier. Our contractor said they would have to wait until spring to pour because they didn’t have enough work coming in to risk having to redo it if it set improperly. I haven’t yet gotten a firm date from them.

For planting, a friend who works at Brooklyn Botanic swears that one should wait until May 1. My experiments with seeds and seedlings lead me to believe you can jump the gun a few weeks.
