Hello all

I thought I might share with you the (almost) culmination of a brownstone gut renovation I embarked on 20 months ago. Having a background in design I drew the plans myself and designed the house entirely, which was the easy part… I consulted this forum as well as other sources for GC recommendations and did as much research as I thought I needed to, but still ended up choosing the wrong GC, who pretended to know more then he did, made a lot of mistakes and cut corners (many of them I only found out about after I fired him) and stopped showing up to work when he finished spending most of the money.
I luckily found a wonderful new GC who saved me and helped me complete the 4 story renovation.
I now live in the duplex apartment, comprising of the basement and first floor of the house, while the second and third floors each are 1 bedroom tenant’s apartments. The duplex is almost finished (I am still fixing problems the first GC left me with), but the rentals are complete and are rented out to lovely tenants. I would be happy to lend advice to any of you out there who are contemplating a gut renovation, as I have learned so much about construction through this process and what to watch out for. I can also recommend some good people. To see the complete work as it stand now you can visit my web showcase:

  1. I have to say I disagree with you, 11217. The post is an ad. OP wants to to link to his website showing his work. BOD and CMU may have gone over the top with snarky responses, but I have to say my initial reaction to the post was similar, and I agree with cmu that OP was quite thin-skinned. I mean, hasn’t he read brownstoner before? What did he think would happen with a forum post that was all “look at me and the wonderful reno I did . . . and by the way, it’s my profession, check my website.” Forum should be mellower than other parts of this site, but it really took two to tango here.

  2. 11217, we rarely agree so I’m not bothered by your comments, but why anyone would be so bothered by what I said as to describe it as ‘abrasive?’, ‘disgusting’and ‘hateful’? weird. If anything, comments by OP and others, including vulgarities, could be so described.

I think OP’s design skills are easily subject to criticism, and offered *specific* comments, and did b-of-d. Maybe not quite in a reasoned fashion, but that’s the web for you.

  3. Very cool! Ignore cmu and dicks, spacedesign. They’re not worth it. But please come back and answer some of the genuine questions that have been posed, we’re all curious.

  4. Interesting Bowl of Dicks, the only people I see here wanting to draw attention to themselves is you and CMU.

It’s quite obvious Mr. B is even embarrassed for the 2 of you, because he normally always highlights on the main page the forum posts which draw a lot of posts/attention, and it would look like he doesn’t want to highlight what was a pretty disgusting display by both you and CMU.

Pointing out things you don’t like is one thing. Going about it in such a callous and abrasive way as you 2 did was offensive.

  5. I also like that you took the time to expose some mistakes as well as highlights of what worked.
I wish more people did this so we all can benefit from this
    thansks again
