Steve, why do you not like the way rolled trim looks? An honest question, I’m not disagreeing. The guys who painted some of my rooms used small foam (or otherwise low texture) rollers for the doors and I think it looks pretty good not having obvious brushstrokes.
When I go in to do a quote, if the customer does not bring it up first, I ask them do they want the ceiling and trim done. There are many times, over 50% of the time, that they just want the walls freshened. Besides, the trim and ceiling will ad a noticable bit to the price. This should all be noted in the contract.
Also, when asking painters to do trim these days, specify that it is to be brushed. All to often I see people rolling trim and doors (that is ok if it is brushed immediatly afterwards when still wet) these days and it is not the way it should be done; it looks poor. I would be sure the contract specifies the trim will be brushed so there is recourse if they roll.
I agree with BHS about using foam rollers. http://www.caseysbuilding.com

I’m asking for a friend & I fear it’s “after” & they didn’t have a signed agreement – the painter just said, “Mouldings weren’t included in my price.”
It should be the whole room – is this before or after the fact?
