We moved in a couple of years ago and thought our cooking gas was included – from the first day, it worked, kept working, and we never received a bill. Now, two years later, it’s been turned off, and it turns out the gas was not included (probably should have realized this was wrong – our bad).

So now we’re going to set up an account with National Grid. Has this situation happened to anyone before? We’re mortified that we’re going to get a bill for the last two years’ worth of cooking gas (gas for heat is definitely included).

On a related note, is National Grid the only option in Brooklyn? If not, is it the cheapest?

  1. Same exact thing happened to me. The charge for 2 years of cooking gas was about 350 bucks. If you’re broke National Grid will set you up on a payment plan.

  2. This happened to me too. It was six months, not two years, but once I figured it out and set up an account I was terrified to see what the charge would be. When the bill came…drumroll..it was $80 (PHEW!). If you’re just using gas for cooking it should not be that bad. I pay about $15 per month.

  3. $1000 for two years? no way. We pay $20 for cooking gas, max, per month. And that’s cooking at home 5 nights a week. $20×24 months = $480

  4. Nat’l Grid is the only supplier but you can go to an ESCO for delivery svc. & I’ve found their prices to be cheaper. Can’t recommend one since prices fluxuate but you can do a search on Nat’l Grid site.

  5. You’re looking at probably a $1,000 or more for two years, depending on how much cooking you did. If it’s in your lease you can’t make the LL pay it so I’d go over it to make sure.

National Grid will probably let you pay it out in installments anyway so you won’t have to pay the whole thing right away.

  6. They’re the only option. Have you confessed to using gas for the last 2 years? Somebody must of been dunned for this account. Maybe the LL? Let him pay the past due.
