Bronx Science from Brooklyn
Our child was accepted to Bronx Science for next year. Does anyone know how kids from Brooklyn (Park Slope) get there? Do parents get together and hire a bus? Or is it the long subway ride only? Would love to be in touch with anyone going there now or next year.

I commuted to Columbia U’s 181st street campus from Park slope. It was about an hour and a half each way.
For a student, it’s actually less bad than for office types, because a student can do their reading/homework on the train. May be more of an issue these days if kids are supposed to do their homework on computer–I wouldn’t want my kid pulling out a laptop on the train every day, eventually somebody’s going to steal it. But anything involving paper should be fine.
Good luck!
I would suggest that you post on insideschools.org or park slope parent. You could also call the parent coordinator at BS. Good luck
Sorry but if your kid who’s smart enough to get into BxSci can’t hack the subway trip to and from school then they should defer and open up the slot to a kid who’s not so delicate.
You’re raising your kid in NYC for crissakes, long obnoxious train commutes are part of what makes you a “real” NYer and not some parochial wuss whose entire life consists of 3 sq blocks.
East New York to Stuy back in the 80’s – that’s a pain in the ass commute, crowded and standing both ways, with either walking through the 14th St 7av tunnels to get to the L or just hoofing it from 7th.
I grew up in Brooklyn (Prospect Heights) and went to Bronx Science via public transportation. Taking the subway to school was fine. The commute averaged about 90 minutes each way via subway. It is an excellent high school and definitely worth the commute! Congratulations!
Best thread today.
crimsonson I agree with you. My parents and I didn’t know about Townsend Harris back then and I kind of regret that because it’s an awesome school (that actually ranks higher than the bigger names in a lot categories) and it was SO much closer to my house! But hey had I gone there I wouldn’t be the subway whiz I am now so it’s all a give and take.
Stuy and BXS is traditionally rated higher than Tech. It is really not a big deal. At the end of it, it is how you perform individually. I have a lot of friends from all the specialized high schools, each with varying level of financial success. I myself is a Tech alumni (but made it in to all 3).
Plus, I would rather have my child go to the one in Queens – Townsend Harris. I think it is better than all 3 specialized science HS.
And yes let, bus or train will work. What ever you and your child feel is the best. I loved my subway commute from Queens to Brooklyn during HS. You spend the afternoon hanging out in Manhattan and Brooklyn – discovering NYC at a young age was great. A lot of NY kids end up socializing in such limited way no matter their socio-economic status. The commute gave you opportunity to broaden your horizon.

Congrats on your kid getting into Bx Sci- which, by the way, has always been considered one of the best HS’s in the City. We used to live across the street from it, in the big white apartment building on Paul Ave and there was an express bus stop right in front of building. Maybe that’s still an option to get in and out of Manhattan, to more trains. But however you do it, it’s a great opportunity for your kid. I have family in Amalgamated which is a block or two from there. The 4 lets you off a few blocks away but there are buses that go right by the schools -DeWitt Clinton is also there.
antidope but Bronx Science does rank higher than Brooklyn Tech, or maybe that’s what you meant to say. Unless the test has totally changed you basically take one test and depending on your score you can go to any number of schools meaning if you make the highest possible cutoff you can go to Stuy, BS, BT and perhaps whatever other new schools someone mentioned (but you’d obviously go to Stuyvesant 99 percent of the time). The second cutoff means you can go to BS and all the rest of the schools and the third cutoff means you can go to BT.
Also the commute really isn’t a big deal at that age, yeah now it would kill me but then it was fun.
