I am working on the renovation of the cellar. The sewer line is 5 feet from the floor and I want to install a half bath. I know a shower is not legal but I don’t see why I shouldn’t have it. I am planning in converting the unused cellar into a home gym and I would like to have a bathroom and a shower. I have found some options: turboflush upflush macerating toilet pump and this site: upflushtoilet.com
Any experience? Any ideas? No need to get recommendation of “a great contractor”, just interested in knowing some homeowners experience. Is a difficult thing to have a bathroom and shower below the sewer line?

Eh, it’s illegal not for any useful technical reason, it’s only illegal to prevent the conversion of a basement into an illegal apartment. The OP doesn’t seem to be doing that, so what the hell.

  3. Illegal or not, you need to install an ejector pump for the sanitary line. You can get either floor mounted or floor recessed models, and it would be triggered by the flush of the WC. I think the vent riser might need to come from the pump, but the manufacturer would help you with that.

  4. Can’t comment on the DOB angle in all this but…

Friends (not in NY) installed this same toilet when they added a guest bedroom to their finished basement. It’s a finicky toilet. It takes a long time to flush and refill, and it can’t handle the workload of a normal toilet: it can process much less solid waste at one time, and it can’t handle tampons or even moderate-sized clumps of toilet paper. For a very infrequently used toilet, it’s OK, but I wouldn’t want it for everyday usage.

  5. From memory the DOB allows 2 water drains in the cellar but the are very cagey about allowing both a toilet & a shower as they get concerned that you will turn that floor into an illegal apartment.

We converted our cellar by the books with full DOB permission and have a washing machine, toilet and laundry sink (as well as a gas dryer).

The washing machine has it’s own pump to put the waste water in the main drain and the toilet & laundry sink go into a sump pump which then pumps them out of the cellar and up into the main waste drain.

Also I second PutnamDenizen. If your alias is your address then it is not much of an alias. Also I am glad that your not my neighbor as stating that something “is not legal but I don’t see why I shouldn’t have it.” certainly shows disdain for your neighbors and the party wall that you share.

  6. If you are stating that you are going to make an illegal renovation (not unknown in these parts, so no judgment), I hope your moniker of “163Clinton” is not also your street address!
