Getting ready to embark on a reno of a small coop kitchen. Will involve disposal of laminate counter & sink, small wall of cabinets, and dishwasher and oven. They are all in terrible shape and unfortunately can’t be donated.

According to my reading of the dept of sanitation website, we can dispose of these items curbside, as long as we don’t exceed 5 or 6 large items. So it may take 2 trash days. For some reason i still feel uneasy about it and I’m looking for confirmation based on experience, is it really ok to dispose of appliances and cabs curbside? thanks!

  1. Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. I’ll give craigslist a try – the appliances are broken in addition to being tremendously old/cheap, but if someone just wants the metal or parts, then perhaps that’ll work.

  2. I agree about craigslist. We sold old appliances for like $20 each and people snapped them up. One guy who bought an old washer insisted on giving us ten bucks more than we were asking 🙂 You can also put out a “curb alert” on craigslist… some people will be glad to take a free appliance even if nasty.

I’d also recommend talking to your trash guys if at all possible. We just moved in and were hauling out all kinds of gross linoleum and carpet in November. My husband talk to our guys and they were clear about how to bundle bulk stuff, etc, and things went very smoothly. We gave them a nice xmas tip too ($60), and now they put our cans back inside the area every time, which is kind of awesome.

  3. We re-did our kitchen recently and posted the dishwasher and oven pics on craigslist for free. They weren’t cute – black 80s- but I got so many calls and someone who really appreciated them. Maybe your definition of terrible isn’t everyone’s.

  4. They will take your cabinets if you break them down and tie them up with rope. Sanitation wont take your oven and dishwasher but there are services that take any form of metal and pick it up from you for free. They then go to metal melting dumpyards and get money for it. Just look on craigslist or in yellowpages and call one of them.

  5. Bulk trash will be picked up on your non-recycling day. Up to 5 pieces I think. If you break down the cabs you can bundle them – 4 feet long by I forget how tall.

  6. I don’t think there is one day a week that is specifically bulk trash day anymore. Call 311 to confirm, but I think you can put big stuff out on any regular trash day now.
