I have a washer/dryer hook up in my new place. It’s new construction so there hasn’t been one hooked up before. Here’s my problem, while the water lines are in the wall (as they should be) the only drain in the utility closet is the one in the floor of the floor. If a washer was installed, it would be sitting on top of this drain pretty much. So my question is, what has to be done to fix this so that a washer will drain properly? Does anyone else have a similar hook up in their places? Is this a complicated job or something simple to fix?

  1. It’s callled a laundry box- not a knockout box. There is a knockout within the laundry box. It can be a pryout piece as well. Carefully remove the piece and you should find the standpipe connected to the box. It has to be there.

  2. I’ll try and post a pic of it. There is space between the hot and cold water pipes for a drain pipe in the knockout box but I’m not sure if it’s actually back there.

  3. The drain in the floor is there in case the washer overflows or the water supply hose leaks. There must be another drain for the washer outflow pipe.

  4. I didn’t see a drain pipe in the knockout box. Do some of these boxes come with a cap that would be hiding the drain pipe that would need to be pried off possible?

  5. As Alex said, the drain is or should be in the knockout box in the wall. Look for a hole next to the valves.

  6. Are you sure you are not overlooking a still sealed drain hose knockout in the laundry box? That’s the usually plastic box the houses the hot and cold valves for the washing machine. I find it hard to believe they installed a floor drain and recessed water valves without a proper laundry drain.
