Tin Ceiling Tiles?
Anyone know a good place to get tin ceiling tiles? Or the modern ones made out of aluminum that look like pressed tin? Reputable on-line retailers or local shops appreciated. Thanks!

I bought Abbington panels 30 years ago.
They are a lifetime investment, up once
and never have to deal again. I bought
cornice pieces to use as window soffits,
and flat panels to use behind an air-tight stove…fireproof when mounted over hardie
backer or cement board (Asbestos board now
being outlawed!) At the time, they also sold
panels in 2×4 standard increments so that they
could be used in suspended ceilings. They also
offered the panels in solid brass or copper!!!
Pricey, but beautiful…for a lifetime or more.
The Armstrong panels are acrylic, NOT metal.
And yes, Lowes and Home Depot either carry the
acrylic panels, or can order them. They or OK
for use around tubs or sinks as backsplash,
but not really very durable over time. They can’t
be scrubbed as cleanser will take the finish off.
I’ve also worked the medallions or single panels
into brick work. Out of traffic flow, they too
will last a lifetime. Make nice architectural
accents. Especially good for tall walls where
you never want to crawl up on a ladder and paint
again. Sadly, even the website now doesn’t work….
Unfortunately Abbington is out of business-I believe Shankar bought them. shanker is not local but if they employ the same techniques as abbington then they are good. TinSmith is very bare bones and their staff not very knowledgable. Its a shame Abbington is no more. Check out the southstuy blogs for some pics of our tin ceiling–I believe there are some recs for places in the comment section
believe it or not, I just saw some at the home depot in the city. I didn’t look closely at them, so I have no idea of cost or quality, but it might be worth checking out.

I was surprised to see that Armstrong has a line of ceiling tiles in metal, since I thought they only did floors. Might be easier to work with than sheets of pressed tin…
