Hi
I am currently renovating my sub basement. I want to replace the metal doors on the coal hatch (in the front of my house) with a skylight so that I can get natural light into the basement. Does anyone have any advise on the best way to approach this? Also, any recommendations on the type of skylight to use?
Thanks
Megan
You may want to take a look at a domed roof hatch, such as this one: http://www.bilco.com/foundations/store/shopdetail.asp?product=1GS-1.
Domed is made for flat roofs (or flat front yards). They seem well built but are pricey. I seem to remember around $2000. I can’t use fakrousa with my roof pitch. Unless I box it to increase the pitch. Hmmmmmmm.
I am planning on doing this on the back of the house and am getting a fakro skylight. they come with several options among which laminated glass, which you def. need. I am getting the one that opens like a door, so I can even get out of the basement if I need to, but your coal shoot is probably to deep for that.
http://www.fakrousa.com/ you could also use velux, but I am not sure if they have the right glass for this application. Don’t forget to install it on a 15% slope.
There’s a house near me that has an iron grate over the actual hole & that’s surmounted by a plastic bubble skylight.
good question, i’d be interested in this answer as well.
one inch frosted plate glass would be my guess.
would also be helpful to know also if it is a necessary point of egress (assuming no other exit) and therefore require outside access (unlocked) with ladder below? i.e. would it have to be on hinges with a latch on the top?
i was told these had to be unlocked. which sucks, because your only security is the iron gate under the stoop.
