I have an original popcorn ceiling from 1964 in my apartment. I’m thinking of flattening it out. Anyone have any experience (or recommendations) on either (a) removing it (scraping it off) first and then skim coating over it – or (b) skim coating right over it?

I know that other apartments with popcorn ceilings in my building have had asbestos detected, so I’m leaning more towards the option of skim coating right over the popcorn so I don’t disturb it.

  1. I had it scraped down and then a new sheet of wallboard was put over it. They did a nice job of marrying the edge to the crown molding. This was on the garden level.
