I am currently looking to rent a place on Manhattan Ave in Greenpoint. I love it! It’s perfect! When I first arrived to view the apartment I asked the Building Manager if there had ever been a history of Bed Bug infestation in the building. He seems to skip a beat for an instant, but replied, “I’m not sure, I would have to check with the landlord.â€
The next day when we spoke on the phone to finalize some details he told me that three years ago the apartment directly above the one I was interested in had reported bed bugs. They apparently treated the entire building and I was told they haven’t had any problems since.
However, after the initial report an exterminator came and found bed bugs in all three apt.’s on that side of the 8 family building. The one above, the one I want and the one below. There were two old women living in the apartment I want to rent and the apartment below, they never reported bugs because they had no physical reaction to them. So even if a problem persisted, they may have never known.
Anyways, the apartment vacated because the old woman moved back to Poland and the place was gut-renovated. The old lady living above (where the infestation was said to originate) is also vacating and that place is going to be gut renovated too.
It seems a little odd to me that two of the three apartments said to be infested are now vacating and being gut-renovated, but the tenants did live there for like 30 years.
Do you think this place is probably okay to move into? It’s a great place and they said they could probably spray before I moved in to ease my mind. What do you think? Is it worth the risk?
“pitbull and other dog owners” were left off it
EXCUSE ME, but in 15 years, my dog has NEVER been the source of bedbugs or any other kind of bugs. She’s very clean.
(I saw on Hoarders that a bedbug can live for a year on only one bite. I’m with *robert on fridays*. As they said in The Amityville Horror, Get out!!)
still. i wouldnt even waste time *thinking* about it before moving in if there was a possibility of bedbugs. like hannah montana says, GUH-ROSS!

Rob, I’m talking about taking the time to think about it *before* she moves in!

GirlDetective, first off, love your login name! Ok…now down to business…whatever advice you get from people here, only *you* can make that final decision of whether or not *you* feel comfortable moving in there. What someone else would do isn’t really going to ease your mind. Sit down and think about it. Can you move in and be pretty sure that you’ll feel ok in there? Are you going to sleep peacefully and not develop a psychological itch every time your hair brushes against your neck? Are you prepared to deal with a possible infestation if it were to occur? Again, only *you* can answer that for yourself. Take a couple of days, think about it and go from there. Good luck!
Without commenting on what was actually included on the above list, it’s interesting to note that “pitbull and other dog owners” were left off it.
Honestly not sure what you should do here, except follow your gut. If you’re feeling qualms, look for another apartment. It’s a renter’s market right now, and you can probably find something comparable.
Maybe if you want to take it, write something into the lease so that you’re not on the hook financially for a bedbug infestation but your landlord is (including the cost of cleaing/replacing your clothes, bed, etc)? If he won’t sign it, then you probably know what you need to know.
some advice for you (some people wont like it…)
if you can avoid the following types of multiunit dwellings with the following kinds of tenants and you will be okay:
1.) old people who never leave their apartments
2.) section 8 families
3.) transient 20 year old partiers
4.) europeans who travel half the year back and forth
those are the 4 biggest bed bug demographics.
if you have doubts, move somewhere else. it’s not worth the hassle. honestly, id rather have cancer than bedbugs.
