I need about twenty gallons! Can anyone recommend who Benjamin Moore the cheapest in Brooklyn or the city? I’ve heard some places have 5 gallon sizes that are less expensive but is this the same quality? Also,is Benjamin Moore really the best paint? Heard Sherwin Williams is pretty good also.

  1. try using the Ben Moore- Super Spec. It is cheaper than some of their more upscale versions and it works great.
Get the big five gallon pails and go to a paint store, not a hardware store. Janovic is good for that.

  2. Georges on MacDonald Avenue, just below Church Ave is a very reasonable source for Ben Moore. FYI, Ben Moore has a much cheaper line of low/no VOC than Aura, called ECO-Spec, which you can get at Leopoldis (5th Avenue & 8th St.) They’re also more reasonable for regular Ben Moore. You can color match with anything, and it’s what we’re now using for everything, including primer.

We’ve used used Mythic – really like that (Pintchik’s, but $$, like Aura), Yolo – green depot in Wmsburg, regular Ben Moore and the low VOC Home Depot brand, which has very good ratings and seems fine. All of these don’t always play nicely with eachother – odd things happen betywqeen one primer and the other company, ets, hence the switch to one brand. Happen to love painting with Farrow & Ball – same price as Aura, but it all got too expensive. The semi gloss in the no VOC/low VOC remains a disappointment, but overall, really love to being able to paint any time with no smell in the house. Have fun with the colors!

  3. by the way- we’ve switched from benjamin moore to the low VOC Home Depot Brand- good colors, not quite as nice on the brush as Ben Moore, but dries fast, and so far has held up well. Best part is you can paint with the rest of the family around and no one complains.

  4. I’ve used them both and don’t see any real discernable differences. Right now I’m painting my parlour with Glidden that I got at HD. I like it a lot and was really surprised when it was only $15 a gallon!!!!

  5. benjamin moore store on 18th and 4th ave has best prices I’ve seen. There is a benjamin moore store on Jamaica Ave in Queens Village NY that sometimes does better, but that’s a hike. Sometimes Pintchik will beat the prices quoted if you;re buying a lot, but that seems to depend on who answers the phone.
