Need advice from handy electrician types! My c. 1940 apartment (80-some unit building) has way too few outlets, and they are only the 2-prong kind. How involved is the work of installing more, assuming I hire a handyman or similar to do the work? Do I need to be worried about ripping walls apart and such? I am a total novice!

Thanks!

  1. Note, that you should NOT BE knocking holes or channeling slots in the demising walls between units and the corrdior. Those are fire rated.

  3. Legally, you need to hire a licensed electrician. If you plan to add a lot more outlets for things like air conditioners and major appliances, you may need to upgrade your electrical box.

And yes – you will have holes in your walls. Mine is full of holes at the moment from electircal work. The electrician has to thread the cables through your walls / floors / ceilings, and all outlets & lights need to be wired to the electircal box, so there has to be a way to physically do this – it is hard to say how many holes because who knows what is behind your walls, ceilings and your floors. The holes are smallish (Mine are max as big as your hand, minimum about 1/4 that size).
