Enlarging Windows
I would like to enlarge the windows in a wood frame attached house. I understand that making the tops of the windows is more difficult that making the bottoms lower. What about making the windows wider? Also, how much does it cost to widen window openings and who would I hire to do it? Thanks.

You can order the tax photo from NYC’s Dept of Records:

Wider or longer requires interfering with the brick work and frame and you will need a licensed contractor to do it. Don’t mess around with this. But I have some Aluminum Clad Brownstone Windows from Andersen the LPC made me remove. I’ll sell them cheap if you decide to do a straight replacement. I don’t know the sizes of them (10) but if you are interested let me know.
Filmer, where can I get a copy of the tax photo?
Thanks
if possible you should get a copy of the tax photo from the 40’s. Ours’s show that our windows were all much longer in the past. It’s likely that yours were as well. as such it may be pretty simple to make them taller by knocking out the fill that was put in to put in shorter ones.
Enlarging opening requires a new header and permit.

Making them wider would still call for major work to support the walls above. You need an engineer.
