Hi,

I found that one of two electric meters is missing security seal. (I mean the transparent plastic piece, which hangs from the bottom of the meter so to prevent people from taking meter off without destroying the seal). I have explained it to the ConEd and they told me that it is Ok and that they recorded my report. Still I feel uncomfortable. The house inspecor neither I noticed the missing seal during house inspection but before we moved in I made bunch of pictures and they show the missing seal. So what should I do about it? Will it create problem in the future?

  1. Ask conedison for a copy of the report on file. If you still feel uncomfortable and wish to get a new meter you have the right to request one especially since the meter has been tampered with. If they do not want to cooperate let them know you will be contacting the public service commission. That will get their attention.

  2. You are probably overlooking the fact that your meter is still secured with a metal ring that is bolted together and covered with a little metal box covering that bolt. The metal box in turn has a barrel lock that attaches it to the ring, preventing its removal. The plastic numbered seal is added on top of that and does not mean your meter is open. Even if you have a more recent ringless meter, which I doubt, there is still a similar locking assembly and the numbered seal is just secondary. No need to worry.

  3. What eman says. It is ConEd’s choice to lock their equipment or not. The burden of proof is on them to prove that they might of been a flat connection.

  4. someone broke the seal after coned locked out the meter..meaning someone was stealing electricity.. as long as you reported it, it should not be a big deal
