We have the pictured 2 inch x 2 inch glass tile as our kitchen backsplash. Our g.c. has tiled most of the backsplash, but needs to have some of the tiles cut in half to finish the edging where walls meet, at corners, etc. The catch is that the tile has a nice, finished edge, and she can’t replicate the look with a diamond glass-cutting blade. Is there a person or glass company that we can take the extra tile to, who will be able to cut them in half and give them a finished edge? Anyone had to do this before?

  1. +1 for arkady.

when we bought our tiles they have seperate edge tiles. We didn’t need them for our particular situation and did what jim hill said, flipped the last tile around with the cut edge on the side of the tile mass.

  2. Another way, which might be easier, and depending upon the cutter, better looking, is to cut the edge that is not exposed. In other words, if you have a filed of tile and the right end is exposed, cut the tile and install it so the cut edge is up against another tile. Depending upon how you are grouting, this may completely conceal the cut edge.

  3. This is possible. First I am sure the tile can be cut using the score and break method. And, I have ground glass for repairs using a bench grinder – so it can be given the edge. But I doubt a wheel would be as accurate as you may want. A wider wheel would help, but who has those these days? (wet grinding is preferred – this dust is dangerous).

Try calling Al at Major Glass in Ridgewood, 718-821-7213. He’s done a lot of glass work for me and i’ve watched him put edges on glass with a big giant water cooled belt sander.

After belting, it may need polishing and this can be done using finer wet/dry papers down to 2000 and then buffed with cerium compound.

Call me if you think I can be of more help-
