hi. i have a brownstone and have two bills come to my house: el 1 for my home and el 2 for the hallway account (we have two other units that each have their own electrical bill).

i’d like to combine the two different bills I pay together under my residential unit bill with the el1 rate because the hallway bill is like $30/month: $26 for con ed and $4 for electrical. in 10 years, that’s basically $3000 wasted (a trip to europe for two weeks!).

any ideas how to do this? i was told that any licensed electrician could do it, but con ed said that my rate on the residential unit would then be the higher el2 commercial rate. urgh. so ridiculous.

thanks for any feedback.

  1. If you are still checking this I would also appreciate the name and contact of your contractor who can combine meters. I just bought an adjoining apartment and ran into the same issue. Thanks. email to greenewable (at) gmail.com

  2. i was told by one of our contractors that it would be easy to combine both cables at the meters in the basement just like you are saying. i just wanted to get the whole con ed thing resolved, though. gah. at least i’m glad to see i’m not the only one irritated by paying con ed $25 for ‘supply’ and around $3 for the actual electricity.

we have a contractor we use for projects if you want a referral.

  3. I have the same question.

i bought two apartments on the 4th floor of a brownstone so now own the whole floor.

i called coned to ask the same thing and was told the only way to do this was to have them on the same meter.

i asked the builder who combine our apartments and was told it would involve replacing all of the cable from the basement up to the 4th floor at $20k.

I only thought abaout it later but couldn’t you just ‘remove one of the meters’ in the basement and then jumper both the riser cables to the 4th floor in the basement to a single meter?

i dont think he wanted the job so just overbid on price.

looking forward to any advice on people who ahve done this before.
