Cheapest Place for Glass?
I need to have a large piece of glass made/cut to go on top of a table. (28 inches wide by 70 inches tall). It doesn’t have to be fancy – just a simple piece that has had the edges sanded down. Anyone know the most affordable glass place around?

MrsLimestone, from your reno blog it seems like you’re no corner cutter – I always find it helpful to just lay out my specs and call a half dozen places for quotes. Otherwise they see you coming from a mile away. I feel that this is usually more important than who I call, but maybe that’s just me.
Thickness (1/4″, 3/8″?), flat polished edge (my fave), bevels if any, tempered, clear glass (ie green) or starfire (ie clear not green). http://bk.ly/bjC Sounds like you are getting something basic but you probably want some kind of polished edge if it will be seen.
You should think long and hard about tempered (some call it toughened) if you have or plan to have kids or don’t like severing arteries (not an exaggeration). I had a miracle near miss tripping, which if i repeated 9 out of 10 times i would have lost my eyesight or much much worse. It seems to me a lot of times people / manufacturers just go with plain annealed (or heavy plate) for cost purposes and its very dangerous. The tempered stuff shatters and won’t kill you. Just a thought.
ps love your blog
I would avoid Bear Glass. They made a back painted backsplash three times that had terrible flaws in the paint. After months of waiting, I finally told them to pack sand and went to Zecca in the bronx, who had it done in a week.
I can reccomend Mega as well. They did a similar-sized piece as a table-top for us and they did a great job.

Crisalvetro Glass and Mirrors on 3rd Ave. Retained them several years ago to make a smoked glass table insert. The work was excellent.
I wasn’t being snide.
“I didn’t waste more time than needed”
Besides, since your OP at 10:43, you’ve wasted almost 2 hours. You could have looked them all up within a mile radius and have called all of them by 11:30, tops!!!! 🙂
I second Lafayette glass. bear glass for things lafayette doesn’t do..
Thanks everyone. Ill check these places out.
Dave – I appreciate its a commodity and I could call every glass place in Brooklyn. I wanted to get some opinions first so I didn’t waste more time than needed. No need to be snide.
Mega Glass & Mirrors, 51 5th Avenue (betw. St. Marks & Bergen): 718-638-7511
I won’t be using Bear again. Maybe affected by holidays, but had some glass cut there recently—took three weeks and lots of calls for them to finish a very simple job that Mega would have turned around the same day, and probably cheaper.
