Xmas Tip Guidelines for Co-op?
This is our first Xmas in a coop. Any suggested guidelines for what size Xmas tips to give to super vs. doorman vs. porter?

you need a new board! I guess some board presidents’ expect free shit from the super. Now that’s tacky.
FROM THE ORIGINAL FORUM POSTER:
thanks to all for their feedback. i also asked several neighbors and found the following $$ ranges across all respondents (brownstoner + neighbors):
super: $100 – $250
doorman: $50 – $100
porter: $50 – $100
obviously, the biggest range is among the super where a lot appears to depend on how much the individual shareholder depends on that person throughout the year for extra help, repairs, etc.
(btw to denton: i asked the board president for her feedback and she linked me to a completely useless and outdated article from emily post (!) which suggested giving $15 to a doorman and $25 to the super.)
I’m sure $100 is fine, and the box of chocolates is a nice touch.
I run a business out of one apartment and pay them a bit more for being nice about signing for lots of packages and allowing us to run gear through the lobby without having to use the freight entrance, etc. In addition to a holiday tip, it’s a bit of a payoff to insure that things go smoothly when needed.
“and $150 to the super”
“and $200 to the super at another apartment”
YIKES! I haven’t been giving enough!!
Are you serious buttermilk, or are you very generous?
I usually give $100 to the super with a box of chocolates.
In all the years I’ve had my apt. he’s never done anything for me (except take out building garbage, shovel snow and rake leaves, etc.). This year, for the first time in 8 years, I asked him to fix a leak in my kitchen sink.
Seriously, is $100 not enough?
In Manhattan. I always gave the super and the doormen $100 each and the porters & handyman $50 each.
doorman is very important if you do not want other to know who you sleep with.
We give $50 tips to 6 doormen and 2 porters, and $150 to the super. And $100 to one doorman and $200 to the super at another apartment in a smaller building. I don’t want to even think of adding it up.
ask the board! Or the managing agent!
