We are in the middle of a gut reno. The contractor has asked if we would like the electrician to run the wires for cable, phone, and a speaker system but it would be an additional charge. Hadn’t really thought about it before but what is the typical cost of running these wires? Checking on line now but was wondering if anyone has done this recently.

  1. Kitchen islands and flatscreens are not historically appropriate in a restored brownstone. Just have the voice tubes cleaned out.

That saud, IB and denton give good advice.

  2. What IB says, unless you’re doing something fancy with the speakers. As long as you’re at it, did you forget the thermostats? And the intercom? If this is a filed gut reno, wasn’t there a set of plans for the electric done by your architect?

And don’t forget to run the wires for a flatscreen in the wall.

  3. Usually the electrician runs everything, including cable, phone, and cat5 along with the rest of the wiring in the house. But if for some reason it wasn’t included with the original price, I wouldn’t pay more than $1000 more for the entire house to be wired. And make sure to put jacks near the kitchen island. Everybody loves surfing the net wirelessly from the kitchen.
