I’m about to buy a summer beach shack that has never been heated and was shut down in the off-season by previous owners. I’d like to stretch the seasons a bit to make it at least a 3-season place. There is a fireplace (could open on both sides) and I was wondering if someone could point be to an insert that I could use to heat the place. Ive seen these in California hotels — fireplaces with remotes that control the temp. Is this an easy thing to do? The shack is very small/primitive. The only fuel source I have is electric or propane. Wouldn’t take much to heat it (if I insulated it) but I don’t want to spend too much on it. It kind of is what it is.

(Wood burning fireplace is kind of useless to me — one of my kids has allergies that are inflamed around a wbf. Unless we burn oak. If you can imagine.)

  1. Hmm. That look has always struck me as being a little depressing, but it would be quick and easy to be sure. Easy enough to try out that’s for sure.

  2. How about sticking a space heater in the fireplace space like they do in England? you could get one of the safer ones. The fireplace is supposed to act as a reflector of heat and a heat sink. Quick and easy.
