We are first time users of google sketchup and wondering if anyone has built a 4 storey floorplan. Would like to play with it to figure out what could work for us.
The size of each floor is 19×40 with 2 extensions and we will be using it as a 3 family, with an owners 4 bedroom duplex and 2 – 2 bedroom rentals.
Please let me know if anyone has one that I could use as a starting point.
Thanks

  1. I disagree. I think sketchup is amazing and after 3 or 4 hours, it is easy to do everything that you want to do. Plus it is free. About to embark on the same journey as you and will be using sketchup for all planning of a 20 x 40 house.

  2. I don’t get this reliance on software sometimes. You want to learn a new and difficult piece of software to draw a floorplan?

How about get some graph paper, 1 box = 1/4″ and ‘sketch’ it out on graph paper. It will be a lot faster, and you won’t have a software learning curve.

There are also free and cheap home design programs that might suit your needs better than ‘sketchup’

  3. Hi Jim,
I am trying to figure out how to configure our proposed home and would like to visualize it before making the decision and letting the architect design it. For example, on one floor, I wanted to see if my wishlist of 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms is realistic in terms of how small the bedrooms would end up being or if it was actually feasible and the only way for us is to figure out what could fit is by sketching it out. I figure it would save a bunch of time for an architect if we were clear on what we wanted than if we made them go through all those iterations for each floor.
    Will contact you.

  4. We’ve done a number of renovations of that type, but I’m a little unclear as to what exactly you’re looking for. It sounds to me like you want an architect to give you a set of floor plans so you can re-draw them in sketchup. Seems like an architect would be giving away may hours of work for free. What’s in it for the architect?

If you’re looking to play with the plans in sketchup with the ultimate goal of hiring an architect to create filing and construction drawings from yours, then you might have something worthwhile.

If that’s something you’re looking to do, or if there’s some other strategy that I’m not seeing, then please contact me off-list at jim(at)urban-pioneering.com.
