Hello all,

I would love recommendations for contractors who soundproof ceilings. I am having unfortunate footfall/impact noise from my neighbors upstairs who are not very accommodating. Looking to only potentially soundproof my bedroom ceiling.

Thanks so much.

  1. Actually, Alan once consulted for a client of mine who was putting in soundproofing (against a complaint of noise), not challenging noise. I reviewed his portfolio at the time. He works either side. He’s done nightclubs and restaurants challenged them. I found him to be honest and practical in his advice.

That said, Ted White is right. Alan doesn’t install, but he does design. Different types of noise penetration require different construction solutions. My point was, before you pay a contractor to do work, you want to make sure you are constructing the right type of soundproofing for your specific problem.

  2. Alan Fierstein of Acoustilog just charges you $3k + to measure the noise level in your unit. One big reason I don’t particularly like this guy is he was primarily responsible for killing a stricter noise compliance provision that was going to be added to the NYC building codes. The minimum requirement for soundproofing is ridiculous in NYC and it was going to be fixed until this guy came as an “expert witness” and starts off about how this isn’t needed and it’s overkill and too expensive for developers.

It’s ironic that people that have soundproofing issues (most are from new owners of condos) pay this guy to measure the noise level in your unit so that you can use this measurement to sue the seller/developer/your neighbors making noise when the whole issue could have be resolved at the construction phase.

Wall to wall noise and floor to ceiling noise could have been a thing of the past for NYC, except “Alan” would then have lost the reason for his business – people complaining about noise from poor construction.

  3. Call Alan Fierstein of Acoustilog. This job may be too small for him to deal with directly, but I bet you will get sound [ahem] recommendations about what to do and who should do it. He knows what he is doing.
