Skylite heat loss
Hey all: How do you prevent heat loss thru this skylite, which is over the stairwell. I’ve heard about the ‘build a plexiglas board’ underneath. THat would be very difficult, for any number of reasons, in this case. What about wrapping something around the opening? It would be something, anyway.

If you want a more permanent solution:
I am having Superior Tinsmith make a new old-style skylight with insulated low-e glass and no draft-creating vent. The quote was $1895 for a 32 x 42 inch skylight.

Ours has a little chip in the glass (outside), and there’s a depression on one side that holds water for days, and it probably drips down into the attic. How do you fix such little things?
What about that plastic stuff you shrink wrap on with a hair dryer? Though maybe you’re saying the inside is not reachable.
Thanks all. the problem with the plexiglass is that on the inside, it is up against a wall, the other sides have light fixtures and other obstructions. And it would need a scaffold to get up there.
Anyway I’ll try some combo of bubble wrap, tape, etc. It will be a lot better than nothing.
Meanwhile I’ll get my GC here to see if he can see something I am missing, or he may have another idea.
Thanks again!
I built a ledge and then screwed in a piece of plexiglass into the ledge. It’s working pretty well. I’ve noticed the difference.
Foam pipe insulation pushed up into vent. Comes in long lengths. 10 minutes work.
bkrules…I have 2…one just like the one pictured here and another taller one with metal vents that are open. I cut pieces of foam insulation and covered the struts and sealed all the edges/corners with aluminum duct tape (don’t use the plastic tape).
Also added the plexiglass “storm” to the inside at the top of the skylight chute.
Try sealing from the inside with that Frost King window insulation kit. It comes in various sizes and that’s what I use in the winter on my windows. It even works on the window my air conditioner is in (I never remove the ac in the winter.)
