Hi,

We recently purchased a gut renovated brownstone duplex apartment(done in 1994) and the living room and dining room (above each other) have bricked in fire places. I can see the outline of cement where the bricks have been placed.

Would it be possible to have the fireplace reopened and made functional once again? Any advice would be much appreciated as I know very little about this sort of thing! (and will eventually consult an expert…)

Thanks!

  1. Too many potential variables to assume you need a bigger chimney or it will cost a mountain of money. May even be fairly simple. What exactly do you want. Open wood burning? Cast iron insert? Do some reasearch off this site. Figure out what you want first and then have a pro tell you if it is possible.

  2. as archimedes said.. “give me a lever long enough and i will move the world”…given enough money and time and anything can be done…what is your budget?

  3. Yes, it is possible to make it functional again however, the old ones were not wood burning but gas fireplaces with a ceramic heating unit ( think ornate fancy toaster ). To make it functional for wood burning you would need to get a chimney company in to make a larger chimney. If you’re in a coop you better run this by the board too.
